Spencer “Bo” Mears II

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Spencer “Bo” Mears, who passed away suddenly on the evening of April 16, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on January 8, 1951, in Darby, PA to the late William and Catherine McGowan (nee Halbe-Mears). He spent his early childhood years growing up in Schuykill County, PA. He was a student at both Upper Darby High School and a proud West Catholic Burr.
Bo was a lifelong bartender beginning at New Deck Tavern (formerly “The Deck”), as well as the American Legion Post 204, Track & Turf, Hasting’s, Haggerty’s and Ricky’s (formerly “Jimmy Macs”).
For the past six years, Bo was also a valued member of the staff and a great friend at The Tower at Oak Hill. The countless friendships he cultivated at each of these establishments created lifelong memories and gave him an immense sense of pride and companionship.
Bo found the greatest joy in life’s simplest pleasures. He enjoyed watching the Fighting Irish and Phillies, reading newspapers, walking the Wildwood boardwalk, and spending time with his grandchildren, especially watching his granddaughter play softball, a sport near and dear to his heart.
Bo is the beloved husband of 42 years to Kathleen (nee Schmidt). He was a loving and dedicated father to Caroline (Al) Braun, Regina (Keith) Olkowski, and Timmy Mears. He was a doting “Pop Bo” to his pride and joy Gabrielle, Max, Alexandra, Tess and grandpup, Benny. He is also survived by his sister Ellen Epperson (Joe Foell), Aunt Ann Helwig (late Don) and many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Viewing and Funeral on Friday morning, April 25, 2025, after 9 AM at The Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, 1723 Race Street (18th Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway). Mass of Christian Burial will start at 11:30 AM with Interment at SS Peter and Paul Cemetery, 1600 Sproul Road, Springfield, PA.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to EOM Athletic Association (144 Moore Street, Philadelphia, PA 19148) or West Catholic Preparatory High School (4501 Chestnut St., Philadelphia, PA 19139).
Arrangements were entrusted to the care of Rachubinski & Rogers Funeral Homes.
