Vernon "Skeeter" William Adam Hilbert Jr., 80, of Pottstown, PA died unexpectedly on January 9th, 2018 at home. He was born to the late Vernon William Adam Hilbert Sr. and Margaret "Peggy" Mary Ambrose (Young) in Allentown, PA. A professor of mathematics, he was a Grandmaster of chess and a member of Mensa. He enjoyed tennis, traveling, spending time with his dog Tiger Lily and keeping in touch with his students. Beloved by many, he was preceded in death by his brother William Hilbert and his sister Donna Louise Kleckner (Ambrose).
He is survived by brothers Charles "Chic" Lewis Hilbert of Emmaus, Donald HIlbert of Macungie, and Robert Hilbert of Greensboro, NC along with sisters Elaine Hosford (Hilbert) of Allentown, Vernette Hilbert of Emmaus, and Janice Sebring (Hilbert) of Lansdowne, PA along with nieces and nephews Timothy Uhl, Todd Uhl, Kerri Lynn Hilbert, Lani Jean Senftleben, Tara Lee Hilbert, Dana Habash, Shana Louise Snyder (Kleckner), Quinn Louise Trowbridge (Kleckner), and Lacey Louise Schmidt (Kleckner).
A visitation period will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, January 19, 2018, at the Heintzelman Funeral Home, Inc. 326 Main Street – Hellertown, PA 18055. Online expressions of sympathy can be recorded at: www.heintzelmancares.com.

My heart is broken...we were the best of friends for over 50 years...I just saw him 2 weeks ago and we had dinner planned for next Thursday. He was the best teacher, friend and the most amazing person.

Mr. Hilbert was a kind and helpful person. I will remember him fondly. I called him several years after graduating to ask for some help with a challenging math course and he was obliging and very helpful. May he rest in peace.
